In 1865, a 25-year-old Claude Monet set out to create a massive, 20-foot-wide tribute to modern leisure titled Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe (Luncheon on the Grass). Monet focused on a sophisticated, fully-clothed picnic in the forest of Fontainebleau. He used his future wife, Camille Doncieux, and his friend, the painter Frédéric Bazille, as models to capture the elegance of the Parisian bourgeoisie. Though the original giant canvas was sadly damaged by dampness and eventually cut into fragments, this scene remains a vital record of Monet's early ambition to bring the scale of "history painting" to everyday, modern life.

  • What You’ll Create:

By painting this scene, you are following Monet’s journey from a traditional student to the father of Impressionism. You will recreate a lush, woodland glade using a rich palette of forest greens, earthy browns, and the crisp, luminous whites of the picnic spread. As you work through the 36 colors, you’ll learn how Monet used "patches" of color rather than smooth gradients to suggest the vibration of light and air. The finished 40x50 cm canvas will be a sophisticated piece of art history, celebrating the joy of nature, fashion, and the timeless art of the picnic.

  • How Paint by Numbers Works:

This is a "guided" art experience. The pre-printed canvas has numbered sections that correspond to the numbered paint pots. Simply dip your brush and fill in the shapes to reveal a professional-looking painting. It is intuitive, relaxing, and fail-proof.

  • Why It’s Special:

This painting is a masterclass in dappled light, a technique that would become the hallmark of the Impressionist movement. While most artists of the time painted in quiet studios, Monet insisted on sketching en plein air (outdoors) to see how sunlight actually filtered through the leaves and landed on white linen. It is special because it captures a "fleeting moment" on a monumental scale - the soft glow on a dress, the shadows of the wine bottles, and the heart carved into the tree trunk all serve to immortalise a single, sun-soaked afternoon that feels as fresh today as it did in the 19th century.
